Interpretation

Interpreting is the oral conversion from one language to another, while translation is the written conversion. Despite having the same objective – to be a bridge between two languages and cultures – they demand different skills and techniques. The oral text, even when formal, presents challenges regarding intonation and pronunciation. A language can have regional variations and numerous accents. The time available for a translation is longer than for an interpretation. In international organisations, the average time for translating a text of 50 lines is two hours, while interpreting it would take eight minutes.

The interpreter's job is immediate and unpredictable because speech is fast and happens according to immediate needs. Thus, self-confidence, good memory, ability to analyse, extensive knowledge of the subject to be treated, eloquence, agility, logical thinking and mastery of technologies are essential characteristics for a high-quality interpretation.

According to the techniques used, we can define three types of interpretation: simultaneous, consecutive and intermittent (ping-pong). Simultaneous interpretation can be in a booth or whispered. It consists of the immediate conversion from one language to the other. The message is transmitted as soon as it becomes intelligible to the interpreter. At Glósses, we do not work with cabin interpretation, only with chuchotage, also known as whispered interpretation. Our interpreters accompany a client during an appointment and whisper the speech to the client as it happens.

Consecutive interpreting occurs when the professional listens to the entire text, takes notes and waits for the interlocutor to finish his speech to interpret. Intermittent interpreting occurs when the interlocutor says two or three sentences and waits for the interpreter to convert the text and then resume speaking.

The type of interpretation chosen is up to the client's preference as any of these techniques can be used in most situations. At Glosses, we offer conference interpreting, community interpreting, medical interpreting and meeting and negotiation interpreting. We guarantee the confidentiality and privacy of our customers by signing confidentiality terms. The technique used will be agreed upon with the client.

We also offer the possibility of remote interpretation for events lasting up to two hours. The professional does not accompany the client physically but interprets through video or audio devices. Some of the means used are Skype, zoom and phone calls.

Voluntary medical interpretation for refugees in Brazil

When people are in a situation of vulnerability and need to communicate in an unknown language, it can make a difference to have professional interpreters who are well prepared to guarantee their safety and well-being.

Voluntarily, without remuneration, we offer the service of remote medical interpretation for people who have gone through a humanitarian crisis and are in Brazil. At the moment, we only have staff available to interpret in the English <=> Portuguese pair. If you know someone who is a refugee, asylum seeker or humanitarian visa holder with a medical appointment scheduled and who does not speak Portuguese and speaks English, please, contact us to arrange an appointment.
